I love reflecting on the year that’s passed and welcoming the energy of a new year. If you’re lucky enough to have time off over the holiday season, take some time to take care of you and get excited for the new year.
Here are my top tips.
Splurge for you
You’ve probably been busy exchanging gifts with friends, family, co-workers. While it’s fun, it can be exhausting on your emotions and your wallet.
Take a breather and splurge on you.
Splurging might mean…
-Getting a massage
-Taking an afternoon just for you (no errands, no work, no kids, just for you)
-Buy yourself the perfume you didn’t want to ask for on your holiday list
Spoil yourself just a little.Reflect on your highlights of the year
I’ve written out my yearly highlights since 2011 and I’m lucky to have a repository of beautiful memories to look back on. It’s one of my favorite things to do each year.
Clean your space or sit in your favorite coffee shop and write all the things that made you smile, feel joy, laugh, this year. Big, small, everything in between. Sometimes I’ll pull up my camera roll to remind myself of all that I did this year.
You’ll be surprised at the small moments that were special to you, alongside the magic of a beautiful vacation.Declutter one drawer
We all have the one drawer that’s overflowing or scary enough that you don’t even know what’s in it. Clear your space, clear your mind. Just pick one drawer so it’s not too overwhelming and finally clean it out.
Set a timer, grab a trash bag, and just go. I cleaned out my nightstand drawer this week and it felt amazing.Write out your perfect day
I’m looking forward to completing this exercise. Write out your perfect day from the moment you wake up to the moment you’ll go to sleep.
Make sure it’s something you can make happen in 2024, but dream big.
Where are you? The beach? Your favorite city?
Who are you with? Totally cool if you’re alone! What are you eating?
How does the day flow?
Feel the positive energy flow through you as you write it out. Get excited! Then plan the day in your calendar to make it happen.Donate 5 items
We probably have 50 items we can donate. But low stakes assignment here, just pick 5 items you can donate this week. People need coats, warm sweaters, and I’m sure you have gently worn, clean items to donate.
And if you don’t, find your local food pantry and pick up 5 extra non-perishable items to donate.Audit one routine, reimagine it
Morning routine. Evening routine. Gym routine. Skincare routine. We all have routines whether we realize it or not. Routines are just actions we take on a regular basis, usually on auto-pilot like brushing your teeth every morning.
But, our routines are often not serving us.
Write down your ideal, but again, make it do-able. If you only have 15 minutes in the morning, then use those 15 mins the best you can. If you have an hour, what are you doing to reset?
Delete, delete, delete
You definitely have something to delete.
-Unsubscribe from emails clogging your inbox-Delete a text thread that brings up a negative emotion
-Delete the random things in your downloads or saved on your desktop
-Delete contacts from your phone if you no longer speak to them
Clear out the old, to invite in the new.
Set one intention
An intention is something you plan to do. It’s different than a goal, as goals are usually external achievements.
Set one intention for yourself for 2024.
It might be to:-Honor your promises to yourself, to people you love
-Love yourself more everyday
-Release anger, resentment, fear that’s holding you back.
My intention for 2024 is to Flow. Go with the flow. Release resistance as I flow. Move downstream, not upstream.
Once you set that one intention, you can then think about how you’ll go about making it happen.
Happy releases to all! Mariam xo
Happy New Year, Mariam! As I clean my house getting ready for my family on Christmas day, I actually clean and organize each area. It's sort of a clean out. I donate incessantly. When I moved, I just threw everything in boxes. It's been 2.5 years now and I'm just getting to where I threw things when I got here. Believe me, there was also a lot of throwing out or donating. It always feels good to reorganize!
